eChristian.comSadly, eChristian.com is shutting down. Their last business day will be January 31st, 2014. Until then, many books are on sale and hundreds of free eBooks and Audiobooks remain available.

Most of their retail eBooks are DRM coded. They say that the books will continue to be readable on your device even after the site closes. However, please read this to be sure. INFORMATION AND ANSWERS

Most, if not all, of the free eBooks do not have DRM.

Any free eBook with a green cover (You’ll know what I mean when you see one.) is a simple copy of the free text available from gutenberg.org. They may or may not be to your taste. I suggest you download one and check it out before you fill your bookshelf.

Their sales prices are good. You might consider a purchase to help them on their way. I’m sure that closing down was a heart breaking decision.

No. I am not an affiliate. I have no connection with eChristian.com; I just wish them well.

Retired sea captain giving away 18 million gospel books

By Michael Ireland
ASSIST News Service

WHkapiteinIN 1989, retired sea captain Warmolt Houwing discovered an illustrated Bible story book, entitled He Lived Among Us. He obtained the copyrights and started giving the books away to fellow seamen in the Port of Antwerp.

Giving away these books has since become his mission in life. By enlisting the support of others, the Toronto-based evangelist has been able to print more than 35 million copies of this book in 40 languages. He distributes all the books free of charge, with help from many different organizations; and now he displays this book on the Internet in 17 languages for free download at: www.gospelcomics.com.

TIP: After downloading the zip file, place it in a folder before you open it. The book is a set of html pages and images; it needs to be contained. After unzipping it right click on the index.html file and send a link to your desktop for easy reading.

Free eBook – Great Christian Historical Novel

Candle in the DarknessWhen I first stared this blog, I did not intend to post any more than once, or maybe twice a week. Frankly, I didn’t think I had that much to share.

Finding this book available for free blew my nice neat schedule out of the water. I just posted yesterday, but I HAD to post this today. I didn’t want you to miss it.

My wife read this (checked it out online from the public library) and it blew her away. She shared some excerpts with me, and just those few paragraphs blew ME away. Candle in the Darkness is a great Christian novel. I’m in the process of reading it now.

This is not normally available for free. Get it before it goes back to the regular $8.99 price.

4 1/2 stars – 414 customer reviews.

DESCRIPTION: Lynn Austin takes readers on a dramatic journey through the Civil War years in her award-winning Refiner’s Fire series. Told in three unique perspectives–Southern, Northern, and slave–each book offers a riveting and eloquent exploration of a nation and its people grappling with racism and injustice. With writing rich in historical detail, Austin brings to life the compelling journeys of characters confronted with the risks and sacrifices their beliefs entail.

That description, taken from the Amazon. com page, does not even come close to telling you what’s really IN THE HEART of the story.

This is the “slave” book in Lynn Austin’s Refiner’s Fire series. We haven’t read the other books in the series (yet) so I don’t know what number this book would be in the sequence.

The slave, Eli, has a LOT to say about truly living the Christian life. He doesn’t just talk it, he walks it.

I may be breaking a rule (hope not) but here is an excerpt from the book This is just a small sample.

I have to!” he shouted. “I’m not like you. I can’t lay down and be a dog for the massa. I’m a man, not a dog!”Eli grabbed his son’s shirtfront and hauled him close, speaking right in his face. “Now you get one thing straight. I know I’m just as good as any white man. Ain’t no difference between me and Massa Fletcher in God’s sight. Bible say there neither slave nor free, but we all one in Christ Jesus.”

“Josiah shook himself loose. “If you believe that, then why you acting all yes sir and no sir? Why you letting them white folks treat you like dirt? How can you live with yourself?” “Because Jesus is my massa, not Massa Fletcher, and Jesus tell me I have to turn the other cheek. He say do good to them that persecute me. Night before He died, He wash all them white men’s feet, even the one who betrayed Him. And He say, `Do just like me: Jesus is God’s son and the white folk treat Him like dirt! They whip Him till He half dead, then they crucify Him. Ain’t no different than way they treat us. Jesus say, `Take up you cross and follow me.’ God knows how we’re treated, Josiah. He put us where we are for time being and give us a job to do. And even if I can’t see a reason why, I gonna do this job for Jesus. I gonna love white folks, whether they love me back or not, ’cause that’s what Jesus tell me to do.”

There’s more where that came from.

Distant DreamsIn a different vein, here is “Distant Dreams” by Judith Pella.

This is a complete novel; 419 pages. Rated 4 out of 5 stars with 145 customer reviews.

DESCRIPTION: “The year is 1835 and Carolina Adams finds herself enchanted by an unlikely suitor…the railroad. Frustrated by society’s expectations upon her gender, she longs to study more masculine subjects and is thrilled when her father grants her a tutor.

James Baldwin arrives to serve as Carolina’s teacher, but of more importance, he is to court Carolina’s beautiful older sister, Virginia. Will expectations–and Virginia’s southern charm–elicit the hoped-for proposal? Or will James and Carolina dare to acknowledge the mutual interests and feelings growing between them?

Free Kindle eBooks – Classics – on Amazon.com

Just one of many free classics.

I enjoy my Kindle Fire; my wife LOVES her Kindle reader. She fairly devours the latest  “thrillers” as soon as they come out.

I intend to post ongoing information on free Kindle books, and perhaps other formats as well. Like Indiana Jones said in Raiders of the Lost Ark: ” I’m making this up as I go.”

For starters, here is a link to a list of over 2,000 free Kindle “Popular Classics.” Yep, I’m a fan of the oldies like Robert Lewis Stevenson, Charles Dickens and the like.

My real interest is in good spiritual books; in particular The Bible.

There are a lot of fine Christian blogs here already. Frankly, I’m not sure how much new material I can add. But, I’ll be digging for it. I’ll share my discoveries here.

Enjoy. http://www.amazon.com/s/?node=2245146011
